Recent comment from Leafs GM Brad Treliving illustrates their plan moving forward this off-season and it's something that might not sit well with the fan base.

Heading into the off-season, the Toronto Maple Leafs were expected to be very active. From having to deal with the departure of Mitch Marner, to working on extensions for John Tavares and Matthew Knies, the Leafs have had their plate full.
As we reached the free agent frenzy, there were still several question marks despite their efforts in being able to extend Tavares and Knies for the foreseeable future, primarily within their top-6 as they needed to find a replacement for Marner.
As minutes turned into hours, the Maple Leafs largely stood pat outside of their lone potential NHL signing in forward Michael Pezzetta.
It was always supposed to be a shallow pool, but not many expected the Leafs to be this quiet. However, as GM Brad Treliving addressed the media, he made mention of what their plan is moving forward and how they want to address their biggest lineup needs.
Treliving understands that team needs help up front, but admits that with the free agent pool thinning by the hour, filling a top-six role will likely have to be through a trade, and considering the fact that they have cap space to work with, it makes a lot more sense.
Treliving not only swung for a young forward with top-6 potential in Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth for a conditional draft pick, he was also able to secure a 3rd line centre for the departing Marner in a sign-and-trade with Vegas in Nicolas Roy.
For now, the Maple Leafs will be idle, but expect things to ramp up in the near future as they look towards the trade market for top-6 help. With all the players that were made available before the draft, like Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson, Treliving has a few options to peruse.
The Maple Leafs' GM will have to get a little more creative than usual to persuade rival general managers with their lack of draft capital, but since it's early, we should remain optimistic in his ability to find a deal.
