Yesterday saw a flurry of big trades take place as teams attempt to get ahead of the last minute frenzy that always occurs on deadline day. Unfortunately for fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs, there was no news to report aside from them checking in on Washington Capitals defenseman Joel Edmundson as a 'Plan B' option. Well, as it turns out, another team has heard about what the Leafs may be trying to do and have since inserted themselves between the Leafs and their backup plan target.

This morning, TSN's Darren Dreger has reported that the Leafs are no longer the front-runners for Edmundson's services as their Atlantic Division rival and opponent tonight, the Boston Bruins, have swooped in and are now the favourites to land the 30-year-old hulking defenseman.
When news of the Leafs being interested in Edmundson broke, many Leaf fans questioned why the Leafs would target another left-handed defenseman when they clearly need to add on the right. He isn't the ideal target, but he would add size and physicality to the blueline, which is something the Leafs need, even after acquiring Ilya Lyubushkin.
Edmundson wreaked havoc on the Leafs during the first-round series win for the Habs in 2021 and helped the Canadiens reach the Stanley Cup Final that season.
With the Leafs and Bruins on a collision course for a first-round matchup, having them swoop in and steal what could be the Leafs' only deadline acquisition may have worse consequences for the Leafs than simply losing future assets.
