The Maple Leafs put together a thrilling win, but lost a key player in the process after William Nylander left last night's game with an injury.

The Leafs earned a chaotic 7-5 victory Saturday in a game that never slowed down, but the mood shifted in the second period when Nylander left after an apparent lower-body injury. Toronto outlasted an Atlantic Division rival in a track meet, yet the result felt secondary once Nylander did not return.
Nylander was injured in the second period following an awkward sequence near the Ottawa net. He skated off under his own power and went straight down the tunnel, prompting immediate concern on the bench. The Leafs offered no in-game details, and Nylander was officially ruled out for the remainder of the night shortly after the start of the 3rd period.
Despite the scare, Toronto pushed through. The Leafs traded chances with Ottawa all evening, combining for twelve goals in one of the season's most open games. Toronto received contributions from both stars and depth players as Nylander, Knies, Matthews, Robertson, McMann and Tavares all got on the board, and the group showed composure late to close out a divisional win that could matter in the standings.
The victory came at a cost. Nylander entered the night on a positive note after continuing what appeared to be the start of another heater, notching his 5th point in his last 2 games. Losing him even briefly would force adjustments, especially with no rest built into the schedule.
After the game, Craig Berube confirmed that Nylander will travel with the team to Detroit for the second half of the back to back. However, the head coach stopped short of confirming whether Nylander will dress tonight.
That uncertainty is familiar territory for Leafs fans. Berube has leaned cautious with injuries all season, particularly when players are central to the team's offensive identity. With travel already locked in, the next evaluation will come after the team arrives in Detroit.
From a fan perspective, this one felt like emotional whiplash. A seven-goal outburst against a divisional opponent should feel celebratory, yet the building buzz quieted once Nylander disappeared from the bench. The Leafs have already navigated injuries and illness this season, and nobody wants to see another core player sidelined, especially right after finally getting Chris Tanev back.
The Leafs will hope the news stays minor. If Nylander can return quickly, Saturday's win stands as an exciting statement game. If not, it becomes another reminder of how thin the margin can feel during a compressed stretch.
The Leafs banked two points and prevented the Sens from taking any points away from this one, successfully completing the first 4-point swing of the road trip. They have the opportunity to do the same tonight in Detroit.
