Alex Nylander on Fire to Begin Season, Giving Maple Leafs Something to Think About

The Maple Leafs have had trouble with depth scoring this season, and with Alex Nylander catching fire to begin the season, it has really given the team something to think about.
The Toronto Marlies play a pivotal role in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. Players in the American Hockey league are always eager for a call-up, and there is currently one Marlies forward who stands out among the rest, making the case to be first in line for an opportunity is Alex Nylander.
Alex Nylander Off to Scorching Start This Season
Coming into their game against the Chicago Wolves on Sunday, Nylander already had three goals and four assists in seven games. He added to that total on Sunday, scoring another two goals in a 4-2 Marlies win to improve their record to 4-4-1 to start the season.
As per Lance Hornby on X:
"Two goals for Alex Nylander and two helpers from Jacob Quillan as Marlies split in Chicago with a 4-2 win today. 36 saves for Akhtyamov."
Nylander now has nine points in eight games for the Marlies, tying him for the team lead with Jacob Quillan, in two less games.
Big Expectations Riding on Quillan in 2025-26
While the expectations for Nylander this season were relatively neutral, the bar for Quillan was decently high after an impressive training camp.
Marlies head coach John Gruden mentioned earlier this summer that he didn't want to see Quillan back with Marlies, implying that the 23 year old may be ready for the NHL.
Whats Next for Maple Leafs?
With the strong play from the Marlies' Nylander and Quillan, the Maple Leafs are in good hands if injuries force a call-up. They have two stellar options available to them.
While the Maple Leafs currently have a plethora of forwards in their arsenal already, it's great to know that there are players producing at a high level in the AHL, because we all know how important good depth is.
