Morgan Rielly was one of the clear talking points for the Maple Leafs this past season, as he struggled to adjust to Craig Berube's system compared to Sheldon Keefe's.

Under Keefe, the Leafs relied on a heavy possession style, always keeping the play alive in the offensive zone. That system fit perfectly with Rielly's game, giving him room to activate and drive play.
With Berube behind the bench, however, Toronto leaned into a North-South, straight-line style of hockey. While this approach benefited several Leafs players, Rielly wasn't one of them. His offensive instincts often felt muted, and his overall impact took a step back.
That doesn't mean Rielly can't rebound. With a full season under Berube now behind him, he has a real chance to reset in 2025-26. It wasn't long ago that Rielly produced at an elite level, recording 10 goals and 68 points in 2021-22. The Leafs clearly believe in him too, holding on to their longest-tenured defenseman instead of entertaining trade talks.
Rielly will almost certainly start the season logging heavy minutes, likely paired with Brandon Carlo. The addition of Carlo, acquired from the Bruins at the deadline, could be the key to unlocking Rielly's game again. Carlo's style is reminiscent of Luke Schenn, whose partnership with Rielly previously brought out some of his best hockey. The difference? Carlo is younger, faster, and still in his prime.
If that pairing clicks, Rielly could easily rediscover his form. He's still a skilled, mobile defenseman with a proven ability to produce while handling tough assignments. After a down season, he now enters 2025-26 with something to prove. Don't be surprised if Morgan Rielly becomes one of the Leafs' most underrated difference-makers this year.
