Star Leafs forward disappointed that Canada/Czechia gold medal game occurring at the same time as tonight's Leafs game
For many hockey fans around the world, the World Junior Championship Hockey Tournament is a late December, early January staple. Like the fans, NHL players are also invested in the tournament, which is why the scheduling of the tournament is a bit of a disappointment - especially for Leafs fans and even for some of the Leafs players themselves.
The Leafs are scheduled to take on the Seattle Kraken tonight in Toronto, with puck drop scheduled to take place shortly after 7PM ET. Meanwhile, the gold medal game between Canada and Czechia is scheduled to take place at 6:30PM ET. While Leafs fans will be able to jump back and forth between games on cable to keep up with each, the players won't have the same luxury. For Mitch Marner, it's a let-down knowing that he and his teammates won't be able to watch the game and cheer on Team Canada because they'll have their hands full with the Kraken tonight.
"Sucks tonight we don't get to watch the gold medal game for Canada ... (Bedard) has been special. What a talent. How he finds the ice ... A lot of skill, his shot is unreal. His work ethic, his compete on pucks has been great to watch."
-Marner on regretfully being unable to tune in to watch Connor Bedard and Team Canada go for gold tonight That's certainly one of the main issues with having a tournament run concurrently with the NHL's regular season. Perhaps, at some point in the future, there will be some discussions on the scheduling of these tournaments. For the time being though, it's tough luck for Marner and the rest of the NHLers who are facing 7pm puck drops of their own while Canada pushes for another WJC gold medal.
