One of the top UFA forwards reportedly coming off the market, on the cusp of signing an enormous new contract

The news broke this morning, though it cannot yet be formally announced due to Forsberg being away for his bachelor party, but the term is expected to be the max 8 years and the AAV is expected to come in around $8.5M per season.

Forsberg put together the best statistical season of his NHL career, surging past the point-per-game mark for the first time, amassing 42 goals and 84 points in just 69 games played. His 18.6% shooting percentage was an absolute moonshot for him - the best in his career by a significant margin. Talk about having a career year at exactly the right time.

The move does not come without some risk for the Preds, however, as Forsberg has played only 3 full seasons in his 10-year NHL career. He has not played more than 69 games in any of the last 5 seasons. Thankfully, when Forsberg is in the lineup, he's been consistently productive and has not been below 0.71 points per game since his sophomore season.

This is a massive contract for Forsberg and a pretty big win for the Preds, who managed to get one of the league's most consistently good players locked up at a pretty reasonable cap hit. The contract will look even better once the cap jumps in a couple of years as well.
