Soon-to-be free agent Max Domi could have a new home in a week and a half. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet said on Sunday in his 32 Thoughts write up that he believes Max Domi could be a good fit with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Domi is no stranger to the Maple Leafs. His dad, Tie, was a fan favourite.
Domi spent this past season splitting time with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes. He played in 72 games, collecting 11 goals and 28 assists for 39 points.
Domi had a career-best season in the 2018-19 season, achieving 72 points in 82 games. Unfortunately for him, since then, he has put up 20-40 points per season. Max was drafted 12th overall in 2013 to the Arizona Coyotes, where he spent three seasons before being traded to Montreal for former Maple Leaf Alex Galchenyuk.
Domi would be a fresh face if the Maple Leafs added him to the lineup, and he would be an instant fan favourite. It's not out of the realm of possibility that he could get himself back to 60-70 point plateau in the right situation in Toronto. He also seems like the type of guy who thrives under the spotlight.
Domi, 27, can play both center and wing and has the ability to play up and down the lineup. He also brings something to the table that the Leafs don't really have a ton of.. ferocity and intensity. Domi can play that
Michael Bunting style of game, but can take things a step further and get his hands dirty when he needs to.
The only issue I could foresee with Domi coming to Toronto is his temper. If he loses his cool at the wrong time, the Leafs could end up shorthanded at inopportune times. So practicing discipline and keeping a cool head would likely be the key to his success in Toronto. But, of course, you have to let the dog off leash every once in awhile. I'm sure Sheldon Keefe knows that.
