Matthews has a laugh at teammate's expense, fakes tossing Marner's 500th point puck over the glass into the crowd
After a pair of losses this week on Tuesday and Thursday against St. Louis and Seattle, the Leafs are hoping to get back in the win column on Saturday with a win over the Detroit Red Wings to cap off a 3-game homestand.
This one was full of milestone evenings, as Alexander Kerfoot is skating in his 400th career NHL game, T.J. Brodie is skating in his 800th career game and Mitch Marner was one point away from his 500th career point, which he recorded in the 2nd period with this sharp-angle shot.
Auston Matthews made sure to swoop in and grab Marner's 500th point puck, as any close friend would. Matthews also had a little fun at Marner's expense - also, as any close friend would - skating over to the boards and faking a gesture of throwing the puck into the crowd. Matthews even fooled the camera man, who fully thought Matthews threw the puck over the glass.
Of course, after he had his fun, Matthews skated over to Bobby Hastings at the Leafs' bench and passed off the puck so that Hastings and the Leafs' equipment staff could do something special with the puck for Marner.
