Matthew Knies scores ridiculous goal of the year candidate
Matthew Knies has pretty much been deemed ''untouchable'' by Kyle Dubas and rightfully so. The 2021 second round pick is a unique combination of size (6'3, 210lbs), skill and speed and has been lighting up the NCAA with the University of Minnesota. The Leafs had hoped to sign him when his season ended last year but Knies decided he wanted to return to the Gophers for another season.
With 33 points in 33 games last year, and 24 in 24 games this year, Knies has continued right where he left off. Last night, early in the second period against Notre Dame, Knies scored a goal-of-the-year candidate with a ridiculous individual effort. Knies first faked going outside on one Notre Dame defender before one-handing the puck through the defenseman's skates, then tucking it through the second defenseman's legs. It led to a partial breakaway and while falling to his knees, Knies finished by putting the puck five-hole.
The goal gave the Gophers a 3-0 lead which they would hold on to. In preparation to sign Knies, the Leafs terminated the contract of defenseman Axel Rindell back in December to free up a contract slot. The Leafs are hoping to add Knies to their roster once his season ends and hope that he will be able to provide some secondary scoring. This kid, obviously, has a ton of upside.
