Following the shocking announcement from Johnny Gaudreau, who chose to sign a 7-year deal with the dark horse Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday on the first day of free agency, Gaudreau made things official by putting pen to paper on Thursday and taking part in a presser in Columbus, Ohio.

Gaudreau revealed during the presser that it was a family decision before anything else and that money was completely a secondary thought in the deal. It was important to him to be somewhere in the Metropolitan Division so he could be a little closer to his family.
There were a lot of dropped jaws and surprised faces when Gaudreau didn't end up with the Flyers, Devils or Islanders, including former teammate, friend and current Maple Leafs defender Mark Giordano. While fielding some questions from the media at a Marner Assist Foundation event last night, Gio spoke briefly on Gaudreau's decision.
"I was definitely surprised - I think a lot of people were. I sent him a quick text to congratulate him yesterday. I'm sure there's a lot of different reasons why and family is probably number one. I'm happy for him, wish him all the best, but other than that, there's not much really else I'm gonna worry or say about it."
Apparently Gaudreau's wife is a nurse who currently work's at a children's hospital. Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus happens to be one of the top facilities in the US, so I'd imagine that factored into their family decision as well.
