Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, Leafs prospect absolutely rolling overseas
After two full seasons in the Leafs organization with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev decided to leave Toronto and return to his homeland.
This past off-season, SDA signed a 2-year deal with Traktor of the KHL. At the time, many thought that this would mark the end of his time with the Leafs, however the Leafs still clearly like the player, as they tendered him a qualifying offer to retain his rights.
A third round pick in the 2018 draft, SDA is off to a hot start with Traktor. Through 10 games, he has 4 goals and 6 points, but more importantly, is playing almost 17 minutes per night.
The knock on SDA since being drafted was his size, being only 5'10 and 170 pounds, per Markerzone. However, he has shown that his size doesn't hinder him, as he had been plenty productive in the AHL and now the KHL.
With the 23-year-old signed for another season beyond this one, the Leafs have some time to wait for him to return to the organization, if he does return to North America in a couple of summers.
With that being said, should SDA have a good season abroad, the Leafs might be more willing to give him a shot on the main roster - something he hasn't really had yet during his time in the Leafs organization.
