Former Ottawa Senator doubles down on comments that the Sens will be better than the Leafs by next season

Always one for trying to make himself relevant by egging on Leaf fans, two years ago on March 9th, 2021, Marc Methot tweeted that the Senators would be better than the Leafs in two to three years and that it "wouldn't even be close".

Today, one fan on Twitter called him out for his tweet two years ago and Methot didn't have any issues with defending his previous stance. In fact, Methot doubled down on his comments saying if he was a Leaf fan he would be starting to get nervous.

While Methot is correct in that he has until March 9th of next year for the tweet to come to fruition, it will certainly not be a runaway - even if the Sens do close the gap on the Leafs. I give full credit to the Sens and core they do have and the fact that Pierre Dorion finally went out and got a defenseman to play with Thomas Chabot - after 5 years of saying he was looking for one, I might add. Not to mention the Sens always give the Leafs a hard time when the two play each other and the Sens' recent 6-3-1 run has them just 5 points out of a wild card spot in the East. The Sens are much closer to being a playoff team than many give them credit for.

However, they are 18 points behind the Leafs. For the Sens to be better than the Leafs and for it to not be close by March of next year, the Sens and Leafs would literally have to flip positions in the standings, which is highly unlikely. The question surrounding the Leafs is always about their goaltending, but the same can be said for the Senators, who currently rank 25th in team save percentage in all situations while the Leafs rank seventh. Ironic, considering the Sens dealt Matt Murray to the Leafs because they didn't believe he could give them quality starts.

The fact of the matter is that the Senators are likely not going to be better than the Leafs until this Leafs core begins its decline, or unless the Buds experience tough losses in other areas of their roster. With the salary cap going up within the next couple of years, I just don't see that happening.
