Former Leafs goaltender ends up on the Saturday night blooper reel with horrendous play
In what was his second game since November, former Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen joined the goalie blooper reel this week. Recently returning from injury, Andersen won his first game back against Columbus earlier this week and got the start against Pittsburgh last night.
In the third period, while Pittsburgh was on the power play, Penguins forward Jake Guentzel lobbed the puck towards Andersen, who caught it with his glove, but instead of freezing it for a whistle, he attempted to keep the play going. He decided to drop the puck and bat it out of mid-air. Unfortunately, the puck hit Rickard Rakell and bounced over Andersen and into the net.
For World Junior fans, it probably reminds you of the 2004 tournament when Marc-Andre Fleury attempted to clear the puck with the game tied when he played it off of Patrick O'Sullivan and into his own net. Thankfully for the Canes, the goal ruined only Andersen's own shutout bid, with the game ending 2-1 in favour of Carolina.
