Easton Cowan's epic post-game comment shows his commitment to winning
Since being drafted 28th overall by the Maple Leafs at the 2023 NHL Draft, it would be an understatement to say that Easton Cowan has exceeded expectations at every turn. His first pre-season outing had his teammates, coaches and fans gushing over his game. His speed, tenacity, compete and nose for the net have some fans wondering if he should make the roster out of camp. While that talk may be premature, it's safe to say he's exceeded everyone's expectations so far. Mitch Marner heaped praise upon the 18-year-old old after the game.
"He was great. Brings a lot of pace, brings a lot of speed. Fiery guy, gets around that net, makes plays. Great to watch him live. - Mitch Marner on Easton Cowan's first game"
The highlight of Cowan's game came in the first period. He scored his first goal as a Leaf, on home ice no less. Pre-season or not, that's a memory most of us would hold onto for the rest of our lives. Imagine being able to put on the jersey you'd worn through your entire childhood, play with the stars you'd looked up to since you were 12 years old and leave them blown away by your play.
Still, Cowan couldn't have cared less about his individual success - instead, voicing his anger that the Leafs couldn't complete the comeback win. When asked if he planned to keep the puck he scored with, Cowan dropped the perfect quote.
No. It doesn't matter. We lost - Easton Cowan
If that doesn't get you excited to see this kid play meaningful games for the Leafs, I don't know what will. This kid is a true competitor and his attitude is going to take him far. Unfortunately, he will more than likely spend the next season or two in the OHL with the London Knights, so we'll have to be patient while we wait for "Cowboy" to be NHL ready. We have to remember that very few players make the NHL at 18 years old, and many of them would have benefitted from having more time to prepare. Still, it's hard not to get excited about this kid.
