Auston Matthews and John Tavares facing possible milestone situations tonight against the Coyotes
The Toronto Maple Leafs play host to the Arizona Coyotes tonight and there are a pair of Leafs who are on the cusp of reaching career milestones, who can both do so tonight. Those two Leafs are captain John Tavares and Arizona native Auston Matthews.
For Tavares, a point tonight would mark the 900th of his impressive NHL career in this, just his 953rd regular season game. Tavares is in his 14th season and his 5th as a Leaf. The former 1st round pick (2009) is one of the most consistent point producers in the NHL and finishes at or near the point-per-game mark every single season and has done so since the final year of his ELC (2011-12).
As for Matthews, an assist tonight would put him at 200 career NHL assists. Yes, that's correct. Matthews has 260 career goals but has not yet eclipsed the 200-assist mark. I'm sure it would be special for him to be able to reach that milestone against the team he grew up watching.
The Leafs, funny enough, are one of the worst teams in the league when coming into a game favoured to win. With the Arizona Coyotes sitting at +400 underdogs tonight, I'm sure there are fans who are considering that action.
