For Sean Avery, talking has always been his strong suit, even when he could no longer play the game at a level that would allow him to be an effective NHLer. Avery has an opinion on just about everything you can imagine. He even has a Cameo account, where he charges people money to hear him speak on a certain subject or talk specifically to a fan or one of their friends or family members.
Avery last played in the NHL during the 2011-12 season with the New York Rangers. Now 43 years old, he not only believes he could still play in the NHL, but he also claims that he'd be able to make the Leafs if he was given 8 weeks to train. He revealed as much on Monday during an appearance on Leafs Morning Take.
Avery credits an active lifestyle and training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as having him in the best shape of his entire life. As a former BJJ practitioner myself, I can confirm that the sport is intensely competitive and very difficult, but also a lot of fun. You can get into excellent shape practicing any martial art, but with Jiu Jitsu, with so much of the sport being about movement and finding ways to one-up your opponent, even if they're physically stronger than you are, you can certainly use it to add to your overall strength and conditioning. However, at 43, I'm not so sure Avery would be able to out-work any of these guys in Toronto on the ice who are half his age.
